Schatner- The perfect introductory track to what we will understand as pure space funk throughout this EP. The sounds all sound like they are actual recordings of black hole noises, and the drum patterns are oh so groovy. This is what you would hear if space travel had radio stations.

Slime Lord- Thick drums, fat bass, and riding patterns. The lead bass sounds so good and has so much personality. It only gets funkier which obscure melodic additions. I love the endings to all of these songs as well, they all seem so perfectly proper.

Warrior-The banger. The very organic sounding drums combined with a whole bunch of digital noises that make no sense sounds beautiful together. I feel like im in a Sega Gamegear with some of these basslines. This isn’t a bad thing. I wish i knew what the whispering was saying, triggering some ASMR in this piece. The atmosphere before these awesomely clunky basslines is also totally primo.

Can’t Stop Now- Sounds like the bridge between disco, 80s new wave and electronic music now. the depth of style is on point as well as the pulsing rhythm. love the soulful keyboard break, this track is great.

This EP definitely tells a story and takes you on a journey which is hard to say about a good amount of electronic music that has come out as of recent, the synth design is tastefully retro, and I think NITEPPL fucking nailed the Warrior EP.

When I first arrived at Lot 613, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this Entheon Kickstarter Party was being thrown in an industrial-type warehouse. Entheon is Alex and Allyson Grey’s current Kickstarter Project, where they are getting very close to raising $125,000 to help build Entheon; a sanctuary which will be open year-round to permanently house Alex Grey’s Chapel of Sacred Mirrors Installations. Before entering Lot 613, I noticed that the entrance of the building had speckles of green light that imitated alien stars. These were well placed, because they would otherwise be hard to see in the Los Angeles sky above.

When I entered the warehouse, I saw that artwork completely lined the walls to give an ambiance of inspiration and creative emotion. It was about 10 p.m. when I got there and the place had a great amount of space to move around and mingle with friends, while listening to wompadelic bass music. The venue also gave attendees the option of chatting outside in the smoking lounge area, with had nicely placed couches for you to make a circle with good pals. After I checked out the layout of the building, I walked around to see live-painters working on their pieces, which spoke to both my mind and soul about the connection between artistic expression and the human experience.

The DJ-booth was designed by Jonathan Singer as a model of Entheon; this altar was first revealed on Bicycle Day at 1015 Folsom, and I was grateful to come face-to-face with it again in L.A. As my eyes raised to the top of the booth, I saw Treavor Moontribe from Desert Dwellers giving some chill down-tempo organic vibes to the crowd. Although upon this realization, I understood that Lynx had relinquished the stage and I had missed her performance, I was still very pleased with the sonic ambiance of Treavor Moontribe’s solo DJ set.

The set started off slower until Moontribe started picking up the pace towards the end of his set. I noticed he was mixing in some aboriginal digeridoos and Middle-eastern sounds to blend in some organic sensation in with his squelchy basslines. There was a psy-trance feel to his set, but his version of psy-trance wasn’t overly demanding attention from his listeners, but instead illiciting a primal connection to the bass.

Thriftworks came on the stage, and instead of giving us a smooth transition between Desert Dwellers and himsef, he almost seemed to cut off the end Moontribe’s set to start playing his higher bpm track. It was unmistakably Thriftworks, with his Pterodactyl (Terry D) sticker clinging to his laptop, and purple bass lines down low, he definitely had more of a gangsta edge to him. The deep vocalized chanting of incoherent words sometimes filled his tracks as he turned the glitch way out. Frequently you could hear melodic keys going up and down in scale throughout his set.

After Thriftworks was finished, and the live graffic designer was finishing up the piece on the screen behind him, Alex and Allyson Grey took the stage. Their always graceful and grateful presence took the room’s thoughtful attention as they educated us about the process of Entheon; which would be an architectural journey through sacred and visionary art. After being inspired by their thoughts, goals, and uplifted energy in the room, Alex and Allyson started painting some of their current work live. They introduced Ken Jordan of Crystal Method to play for his avid fans on the stage beside them.

Ken Jordan turned the energy up for his set, a lot! He was going so hard in a house-trance state, that it was almost overwhelmingly intense. When the bass kicked in, the whole room vibrated with sonic booms of bass cracking through the air waves. Although I remember liking Crystal Method as one of the earliest electronic acts since the early 90s, it didn’t seem to mesh with my personal tastes at the time. But that didn’t keep me from leaving the room. I was happy crowd-watching diehard fans jump sporadically up and down to Jordan’s sounds and he gave them a classic Crystal Method mix. I went outside to meet some new friends and listened to the blasting beats as they emanated from the warehouse for the rest of his set. As I heard something more down-tempo and funky come on, I realized Michal Menert from Pretty Lights Music had taken the stage.

Menert filled the room with loving vibes as soon as he took the stage. He played soulful vocal samples, and mixed it in with his glitch-hop and dubstep vibes. At certain points he was MCing and freestyling his own rhymes on top of his tracks. One of his rhymes was entitled “My Favorite Things”, where Menert comedically spoke of some of the things he loves most. At this point, the people that I came with had gone outside, but I didn’t care to follow them because I was vibe-ing so much from Menert’s set. His versatile tracks and his lovable, expressive stage-presence left me glued to the floor for the rest of the night.

Towards the end of his set, Alex and Allyson Grey  showed the Entheon Kickstarter video, and Allyson Grey went over all the awesome prizes you could get if you pledge to their Kickstarter. I already scoped their Kickstarter page before so I was somewhat aware of the gifts you could recieve by backing them, but some of them seemed amazingly out there, like a self-portrait painted by Alex Grey himself. After their speech, they introduced Ott to the stage as a crackle sound boomed over the speakers. Ott’s face lit in suprise to the possibility of his set being ruined by a technical difficuly, but all signs were go as he started his first track.

The night ended with Ott and his atmospheric psy-dub sounds. Flighty spacey synths lifted you up, while crunchy bass brought you back down to earth along with weird vocal samples and accordion-like melodies. The melodies felt Balkan-esque while many ofther other sounds were primordial or alien in nature. Ott had the power to bring you back into your original sentient being state, to forget about all the sources outside of this meditative, trance-like state which was full of primal bliss. As the set was winding down, and as I realized I still had a three hour drive back home, I knew that it was sadly time to depart.

It was another occasion where Euphonic Conceptions did it big, and brought an amazing line-up that I could never have dreamt of seeing together. The positive energy from this experience enriched my soul and made me wonder why there aren’t more events like this that bring art, community, and music together full-circle. Rex Mundi has released his Hidden Treasures E.P and it sure is special. It is a three track E.P., with each track adding its own unique sound. The E.P. starts with its namesake, “Hidden Treasures”, which is very long track but worth every second. The track features amazing percussion and ambient pads that create a great sense of tension and anticipation, resulting in a very tribal sound. The next track, “Seek & Destroy”, ups the intensity providing raw drive and power. The final track of the E.P., “Watch”, calms things down with melody and deep ambient sounds, resulting in a dark track that takes us down the rabbit hole. Check out all three tracks below.

One of our recent favorites over here at MYN, El. Train has a new EP out titled Origins. It’s sexy, chilled out tunes, with big smooth bass hits, future synths, samples and chops, and dope vocal samples. There are five tracks, each showcasing a little different sound by mixing up tempos, instruments, and vocals to give it a nice balance. If you had to classify this EP, it blends elements from trap and trill, experimental, hip hop instrumentals, deep house and more. Hey everyone, welcome back to another edition of Tipsy Tree Thursdays here on Music you Need.  This week I’m featuring Austin producer Velcoff.  He has just released an EP titled V that features three original tracks and I’d like to share them with you.

The first track off V is “Digital.”  It’s a drumstep track so it’s packed with intricate drum work and fills while giving the listener the heavy basslines they crave.  It has a great melody theme shown through the synth design throughout.  Great introduction to his EP.  It’s a free download below.

The second track is “Nutshell.”  It’s an Electro House tune that has an almost Designer Drugs vibe through the bass stabs.  It’s an instant party/festival track.   I like the breakdown because it gives the dancefloor a break without sucking all of the energy out of the scene.  The second drop also brings a heightened energy level unmatched by the rest of the instrumental.  It’s also another free download below.

The finale of the EP is titled “Frontier.”  It’s a Dubstep track that brings some epic synths to the table. I really enjoy the melodic fills throughout.  It’s a great way to end a solid EP.  Like the rest of the EP, it’s also a free download, so grab it below.

Overall, I love the flow of the EP.  It benefits from a shared theme sound wise and can be listened to like a story.  I picture “Digital” being the incline of a mountain, “Nutshell” being the top where the epic fight takes place, and followed by “Frontier” being the resolution.  This EP is huge and I expect great things from Velcoff.  Give him some love at the links below.

I had the pleasure to attend the 6th annual Purple Hatters Ball this past weekend at The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, FL.  PHB is a celebration of the life of Rachel Morningstar Hoffman, a young woman whose life was needlessly taken during a deal with law enforcement, where she was given money and asked to buy drugs and weapons from known criminals in order to get out of a marijuana charge.  Later she was found murdered with the very weapon she was instructed to buy.  Although I never knew Rachel personally, one can’t attend Purple Hatters Ball without realizing that she was part of a close community and is missed greatly. This was to be the third PHB I’ve attended, and I was looking forward seeing a lot of old friends.

Suwannee Music Park is held in Live Oak, FL, and could easily be one of the top festival venues in the world.  Not only is it beautiful, but the grounds allow to you camp freely anywhere, build your own fires, rent golf carts, cabins, and comes with a fully stocked general store. SOSMP creates a carefree environment amongst the Spanish moss-covered forest, and after only a few visits, begins to feel like a family reunion.

Friday started off right with electronic acts and beautiful weather on the Crunchay Campground Stage. Sets from from Mason Masters, Andy Reed and Matthew Conners summoned people out of their campsites and set them dancing for the rest of the weekend.  With just a couple bands scheduled on the Porch Stage that afternoon, I spent most of the evening enjoying The Malah, Quantic, and The New Mastersounds over at the Amphitheater Stage.  The Amphitheater is an intimate formation which was built from natural materials found in Live Oak, and decorated with amazing lights and lasers. I paused at one moment to stop and watch the live painters and listen to the The New Mastersounds finishing the evening out with a collaboration that could only happen in Live Oak, including members of Qauntic alongside Roosevelt Collier.

When I awoke on Saturday everyone in my camp seemed pretty tired from partying the night before. Of course, with a few Bloody Mary’s the crew was back in full swing and ready to seize the day.  We grabbed a 60″ hoop (that a friend and I had taped), put on our fuzzy purple hats (a tradition of the festival) and headed up to see S.P.O.R.E. on the Crunchay Lake Stage.  They had a great set with a sit-in from Leo Kulishevskiy on violin, catching the attention of many for the first time.  An hour set from SPEKTRUM was bumping so loud you could hear it anywhere in the campground. Next up, Vladimir Kulishevskiy (Vlad the Inhaler) mixed while collaborating with his brother Leo on violin, Wil Begley (of Lucky Costello) on keys and Reo Morris on drums, for a quartet that kept people dancing even through an unexpected thunderstorm.  The rain inevitably kept a lot of people from seeing music the rest of the evening, including Sir Charles and Dubconscious.

Even though there were a few overlapping set times Saturday evening, the Porch Stage and the Amphitheater Stage are located a very brief walk away from one another, allowing you to see a lot of music. I sat for a while in the back of the Amphitheater Stage, lounging in a hammock, listening to Emancipator and admiring how beautiful the scenery was.  The crowd was full of smiling, dancing people of all ages. The lights and warmth get denser as you approached the stage.  I saw a large amount of LED toys, rage sticks, and light-up hula hoops an obvious staple amongst the crowd.  I stayed there and took it all in until Greenhouse Lounge started, and I was drawn to the Porch Stage.

GHL pulled the largest crowd I had seen over at the Porch Stage that weekend, dropping their unique blend of live lounge and hip-hop (and ultimately an energetic Daft Punk cover). This band has been a part of PHB since it’s beginning, so it was no surprise the whole festival made it out to their set.  As the evening wound down, Lettuce hit the stage with what could only be described as a monster party, giving us some much needed funk to get down to after the day’s heavily electronic lineup. The night flew by me, and before I realized, it was Sunday morning.

I was late waking up and ended up rushing to catch Stone Street’s last show. Emotions were high and the guys were on point – one can only wish them the best in the future. Some of the crowd had left the festival that morning and others were leaving throughout the day, but those who stayed witnessed a perfect fix for those end-of-the-festival blues. Bear Creek regulars Roosevelt Collier & Nigel Hall improvised a tasty Sunday service together for their Gospel Surprise, and following that was a set from Jacksonville-based band Chroma.  By the time Lucky Costello played that evening, everyone who was staying all night came to the Porch Stage to get down. The energy was high with a very family vibe as Lucky played a two hour set, finishing out the weekend with a bang.  Almost immediately after the show ended, much of the audience joined together for a massive group picture to say their goodbyes.

It wasn’t over yet, though. Crunchay took over the indoor Music Hall for one last hoorah, with DJs spinning until late that night.  The tile floor was lit up with glow toys and theatrical dancers, fog machines, lasers and lights. I spent the rest of the evening visiting friends at campfires, playing drums, and scooting around on golf carts, all the while sharing whiskey and slap bags full of wine until Jacksonville beckoned me home.

On the ride back, I couldn’t help but be proud of all my hometown bands performing this weekend. Living in Jacksonville for the past seven years I’ve been able to watch the music scene there grow. It’s blooming now, and it’s great to be a part of it. It’s obvious that much of that growth is due to the efforts of event planners like Paul Levine, who continuously bring music from all over to the world to our backyard.

Electric Forest is approaching and tickets and packages are starting to sell out. Regular tickets are available for $259 (plus ticket fees) and The Good Life Village and Good Life Back 40 are still available. Grab your tickets quick before they sell out, which may or may not happen, but better safe than sorry because you don’t want to miss out on this epic journey in Sherwood Forest.

As most of you probably already know, Sherwood Forest is expanding in size; and what comes with expansion is more room for state of the art, jaw dropping, art installations throughout the forest. Some of these installations are Dream Garden, Bioluminescence, Electric Garden, and The Cerebrum. These are just a few to name off, out of many others to be displayed at this year’s Electric Forest. The ingenuity of these installations alone is enough justification to attend Electric Forest this year! Check em’ out!

The Dream Garden

The Dream Garden is a string-art installation that reveals geometrical patterns, using simple pieces of string. The garden consists UV-reactive, circular string-art creations that are inspired by the ancient symbols of dreamcatchers and mandalas. Both these use sacred geometry for a specific purpose. The dreamcatcher is a tool used by many Native American cultures. The interweaving geometries of the string trap bad dreams, while the empty part in the center allows the good dreams to pass through. The power of the dreamcatcher comes from the geometry of the mandala, an ancient symbol depicting the oneness or truth of our being. The oneness of being is represented by the center of the geometry, and patterns radiate out of this center point. Mandalas have been used by ancient people for thousands of years for meditation, healing, and elevation to a higher consciousness. The Dream Garden takes the concept of the mandala and dreamcatcher, and brings them into a whole new light. Experiencing the amazing geometric shapes that a simple piece of string can create will reveal the consciousness of their intention, and the dreamcatcher shapes will allow the viewer to ponder their own thoughts and dreams as they experience the artwork.

Bioluminesce

Bioluminesce is a large scale interactive light, audio and structural sculpture. Standing at nearly 24 feet tall, Bioluminesce reaches skyward inviting you to interact. During the day, five knobs on the base of the structure can be rotated, causing a nature inspired soundtrack to emit from the tree. During the night, the knobs will continue to affect the soundtrack, but in addition will cause the tree to glow from within. As each knob is manipulated the tree will shift in hue, dancing in a beautiful aurora of light.
Through harnessing the technological and structural capabilities of the team members, Bioluminesce will glow bright in the forest, garnering participants and rewarding them with a beautiful interactive show.

Electric Garden

das’lala’s “Electric Garden” is an interactive, electronic, touch-sensitive garden that glows brightly upon human touch. This electro-luminescent field of over 40 giant glowing flower sculptures will be situated deep in the Forest for festival-goers to play, touch, engage, and relax. Encounter first-hand the magic of the Forest in an immersive and surreal digital nature experience.

The Cerebrum

Electric Forest is a living organism, with Sherwood Forest at the heart of the festival providing the pulse. Sherwood Forest is growing this year, and what is at the epicenter controlling this ever-evolving experience of wonder? The Cerebrum of Sherwood Forest. The human brain is responsible for the sensations and perceptions we experience, and Imago Collective is personifying the living being that is Electric Forest by giving festival-goers a chance to experience the mind of the forest.
Imago is building a large scale, polygon-style brain that will be suspended in the air and brought to life through generative projection mapping. The brain will offer audiences a mind-bending show through an expansive visual set that will offer something new to see each time it’s encountered.
The goal of this installation is to offer individuals the chance to perceive themselves as a part of the Electric Forest macrocosm. This stunning visual experience will lead to the connection of individuals, through the perception of the festival’s greater whole; sparking interaction between strangers. Collectively, these interactions fulfill the potential of the Cerebrum of Sherwood Forest and unite festival-goers.

If you haven’t read our previous MYN interview with Psymbionic, it’s time for you to get to know this Emissions Festival Featured Artist. He recently came out with his PostWaveFutureCore EP, now this great EP has been remixed by talented producers such as: Love & Light, Samples, Knight Riderz, and Dov, to name a few. With Psymbionic’s PostWaveFutureCore West Coast Tour coming up, you can expect to see him at this year’s Emissions Festival, being held in Belden Ca, from May 17th-19th. This exquisite line-up will feature a ton of alternative bass music for your underground hearts and ears to fall in love with. Some of the headliners include: DJ Shadow, The Polish Ambassador, and ill.Gates. The line-up also features experimental underground artists like Psymbionic for you to become mesmerized by. Irie Cartel and Camp ? are throwing this leave-no-trace festival, so when you get inside Emissions, make sure to give thanks to these crews. Since we haven’t checked in with you lately, what has Psymbionic been up to these days? 

A lot has been going on! Been hard at work with the label I manage called Gravitas Recordings, and working on new original material for an upcoming solo release. I’ve recently done remixes for Mr. Bill and Love & Light, a bootleg of 311′s “Amber”, and a collab with D.V.S* in between playing shows in all corners of the country. I’ve even started to work on some super downtempo originals, although I’m not sure how I will get around to releasing those just yet.

For those future fans that haven’t heard you before (or scoped your previous MYN interview), how would you describe your musical essence?

In short, I love taking bits and pieces from many different styles and sounds, and combining them together in new yet digestible ways – you might call it “experimental dance music” if we’re using the taboo ‘EDM’ abbreviation haha. The idea of the title “PostWaveFutureCore” was a bit of a stab at genre names.. see, if you take the prefixes and suffixes of genres and put them together, then they have no meaning anymore. Wtf is “FutureCore”, anyway?

What inspired you to get producers like Love & Light and Samples to remix your latest EP, PostWaveFutureCore?

A lot of these guys have been long time friends and inspirations. Aligning Minds, for example – I’ve been listening to their tunes since probably 2008 or something. I met Ben Samples and Love & Light both in 2009/2010 if I remember correctly, a lot of us back then connected through Glitch Hop Forum. Knight Riderz too. I first got turned onto Hypha’s music back in 2011 when we played together in Arcata. Dov of course is the head of Muti Music (where this album came out), one of my favorite labels for many years without a doubt!

What is your favorite part about collaborating and working with other producers? 

It’s always an amazing way to break you out of your own structure and routine. I think creativity by definition thrives when you can bust out of your shell and try new and weird things, and collaborating tends to bring that out in people who don’t often work together. Of course, hearing my own tracks remixed by others gives me a plethora of ideas of how I might have made the track differently when I originally produced it too.

Have you ever been to a previous Emissions Festival before? 

In fact I have, and I actually have an interesting story! I played in 2011, and rode up to the festival with Matt & Ryan from Love and Light. We packed light since we could only stay 1 night, but even in May it ended up raining a lot then eventually snowing 2 inches! We were quite unprepared.. made for a chilly night haha. Still had an amazing time!

What are you most excited about for this year’s Emissions Festival?

I am pretty excited to see DJ Shadow in this kind of environment, and I think the Minnesota + G Jones set should be awesome as well! Of course it will also be great to see lots of homies out there too.

If you could transform your music into any mythylogical beast, what would it be?

Because my music is so diverse, I imagine it would be some type of chimera type creature – a combination of a bunch of different animals. Maybe a penguin-tiger or a dolphin-phoenix (I do realize that probably wouldn’t make a very cool creature hahahah).

What’s next for Psymbionic? 

Like I mentioned, I’ve been hard at work on a bunch of new originals. Besides that, I’m finishing up a collab with Wick-It The Instigator and a remix for Minnesota! Along with Emissions, I’ll also be playing shows this week in San Francisco, Sebastopol, and Arcata, then hitting the midwest/south and beyond next month.

Alex and Allyson Grey revealed their Entheon Kickstarter Project on Bicycle Day this year, and now they are turning this Kickstarter up a notch by throwing an awesome party with artists Michal Menert (from Pretty Lights Music), Ott, Thriftworks, Desert Dwellers, Lynx, and more. The Alex Grey Visionary Art Experience – Entheon Kickstarter Party, is being presented by the wonderful people at Euphonic Conceptions, as well as the folks at Challenger, LA Confidential, and The Real. For those of you who haven’t been enlightened yet about the Entheon Project, it is Alex and Allyson Grey’s vision to build a permanent sanctuary space for the mesmerizing Chapel of Sacred Mirror installations to take root. YUP. Back with another one already! As is the recent trend, I have decided to diversify my song a bit for this time around. I’m still stuck on the future sounds, and more of the mellow vibes, so I’ve just been digging trying to find the best tracks that are really pushing the envelope and making NEW music. If you want bass heavy, booty-bouncing tech house then Anabatic is the place to get it. They have never veered far from their specialty of bringing bass to your face with artists that have been holding it down since day one, as well as young up and comers. This EP, From The Back, from the appropriately named Lux Groove is definitely bringing the the groove as well as the bass in this two track heater. The namesake track “From The Back” has the sounds that we’ve become accustomed to hearing from Anabatic with an interesting bassline; deep, gnarled vocals; and some killer drums. The second track “Day Trippin” is more centered on a low end bassline, really tight snare drums, swirling synths, and feminine vocals that just scream “summer jam” to me. These deluxe grooves from Lux Groove will not dissapoint.

Your monikers include PattyProgrammer and DigitalVagabond. Why choose to have two monikers?

The method at which  music is heard by listener has always interested me. Social Networks such as soundcloud, facebook and bandcamp make bedroom DJ’s and producers as powerful as major record labels. The internet is leveling the playing field for multi media artists, it’s leveling the playing field for everyone. DigitalVagabond has become the brand name for my many forms of artistic creation. DV originated as my lostinsound.org blog handle. As I discovered new music from around the world DJing became an outlet to share that music and familiarize people to the style of music I was beginning to create.  PattyProgrammer is solely my original electronic music productions, it was a nickname given to me by the guys in lespecial referring to my technical and micromanaging skillsets. When those guys give you a nickname it tends to stick.

How do you see yourself as a vagabond transversing the digital age? Do you find a sense of consistency within these nomadic changes?

I’ve always found myself dabbling in digital media of all formats. I do a lot of freelance graphic design, photo and video work here in Boston. I spent the better part of 2 years backpacking and traveling the US before settling here. I think change is what keeps us healthily evolving. Change is constant, the more you are able to adapt to change, the better chance for your survival. I have friends and family all over the world and I aim to use music as a vehicle to spread my art and connect with the global community. Intelligent, heartfelt art of any style or medium tends to lead me to where I need to be.

How long have you been producing/making music for? Have your sounds always been this strange?

I have played drums and guitar for most of my life. I got my first drumset when I was 6. I was in metal bands in highschool and have always gravitated towards darker, emotive, enchanting motifs. Music is a form of transmutation. Darkness and “negativity” can be healthily metabolized through art and conscious creation.
If you were to monitor human struggle closely over time you will see spikes in human creativity following very closely.
A year ago this month I began working within ableton. My roommate, a Producer/DJ by the name “eelko” has blessed me with invaluable knowledge about music production. His degree in audio science and years of mixing experience are experiences are masterfully portrayed through his high quality productions. I suggest everyone give him a listen.

Can you also talk about your part in the Electrogenic art collective? What medium(s) do you choose to express yourself through?

Electrogenic is a collective of visual and audio specialists. All of us believe in work equality and collective efforts. Each specialist brings their unique skill set to the table and we pride ourselves on creating unique art driven events and environments. My primary artistic mediums are Jewelry Fabrication, Graphic Design, Photography, Videography and Audio Production/DJing.

Do you believe that art; whether it be auditory, visual, tactile, or olfactory, can transform the world?

I believe that all life is art. All creation is art. As we get more informed and connected as an organism we become more efficient art makers.

How did you start writing for the music blog Lost in Sound?

I met the lostinsound crew here in Boston in the summer of 2010. Their passion for music and spreading the culture became a higher purpose for me. What started as a core group of about 20 of us from all over the north east, has now spread internationally to over 70 contributing members and 15 co-managers. My role as a content creator slowly evolved into a co-manager role where I now manage our Bandcamp and Soundcloud and contribute international content and interviews weekly.

Where do you get your inspiration or drive from when you start working on a track? Does it hit you like a ton of bricks or do you feel it throughout your being?

I draw inspiration from every facet of reality. As far as musical inspiration I find myself most inspired by the music I listen to regularly. I tend to dig and dig for newer and newer sonic exploration. Then go into production mode to put my own spin on the sounds that I’ve heard elsewhere.  I am very blessed to be surrounded by incredible artists of all mediums, so they inspire me deeply as well.

Many of you who follow us may not know yet, but were huge fans of Pumpkin here at Music You Need. He makes his rounds through most of the gatherings and festivals that we attend and frequently plays in California to devoted crowds of loving fans. If you’ve seen Pumpkin perform then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. The thing is up until now I had an idea of who I thought he was as a producer and DJ, and then something happened. As of 2 days ago he decided to upload some of the first mixes he ever did and they completely blew my mind and changed my conception of who Pumpkin is, the genres he plays, and the amount of talent he has. Needless to say, he just jumped up a few notches in my book and I think you need to give these mixes a chance because all three are pretty amazing. I’m sure most of you will have these on repeat once you hear them, so do yourself a favor, grab some headphones, get comfy and enjoy!
