Hey everyone, welcome back to another edition of Tipsy Tree Thursdays here on Music You Need. This week I’m featuring 19-year-old Michigan based DJ and producer Cameron Oakley. Cameron has been DJing since he was a little kid, but recently has picked up his production skills. He’s active in the Michigan nightlife scene and has recently opened up for Designer Drugs. He uses Ableton for producing and a slick S4 for DJing. For more information, check out his interview at the bottom of the article.
His fresh new track is titled “Funkadelic” and is heavy Electro House instrumental. I love the hook he’s used built into the core of the track. It’s a catchy melody and backed up by a strong marching rhythm. It’s a free download, so grab it below.
His other latest production is a collaboration with Fibroblast titled “Cimmerian Shade.” It’s a Drumstep track that has some simple, yet effective vocal samples sprinkled throughout. Like “Funkadelic,” “Cimmerian Shade” features a catchy melody. The main drop 3 minutes in is exceptional. Well done guys. Check it out below.
Looking for a DJ set for your workout or cubicle time this week? Checkout Cameron Oakley’s “Hour long practice mix.” Genre wise it’s all over the place, but I like how it’s mixed. It’s a free download as well.
Want some dirty Electro House? If so, check out the appropriately titled “Pump Up” track. I love the heavy saw synth use. That combined with some heavy side-chaining, and you have a recipe that I cannot refuse. It also uses some energy driving vocal samples. It’s a free download, so grab it while it’s available.
I love the work that Cameron Oakley is doing and I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store for this young producer. Give him some love below.
Full Interview with Cameron Oakley:
How long have you been Producing? DJing?
I was given a pair of vinyl turntables when I was about 9 and messed around with them my entire life as a hobby, but I started producing and messing around with DAW’s 2 years ago and picked up a cheap little controller for digital DJing which is when I started to get serious about it.
What are you currently working on?
Currently I am working on putting together an LP for 2013
I noticed you produced Cimmerian Shade with a friend. Did you learn anything while making this track as a collaboration that you’d like to share? Anything else learned in the production?
I actually taught the friend I did the collaboration with the basics of getting started with production, once he started to get the hang of it we started working together and cimmerian shade was the outcome.
How are you involved with/ how is the music scene in Michigan?
I play show’s at nightclubs and venues in MI and am constantly meeting new artists and learning new techniques from everyone that I can. Everyone that I’ve met in the music scene so far have been awesome, I especially have to give a big thanks to my friend Dink Detroit who has helped me out tremendously.
What is your DAW of choice?
What is your DJing method of choice?
I use a traktor kontrol s4 and cannot get enough of it!
