In the blistering heat of Arizona its not the least bit rare to attend a music festival at a waterpark. Thousands of bikini clad bodies danced the night away to some of the biggest names in EDM such as R3hab, Felix Cartal, Adventure Club, and Calvin Harris. So when I heard Soundwave was going to be hosted at Big Surf Water Park, I instantly knew this would be one of the biggest and craziest events that has every hit Tempe.
When I arrived at Big Surf Water Park, I was in awe. The place was packed with eager festival goers in bikinis. As the sun was setting, Felix Cartal was just beginning his performance at the Red Bull Stage. The crowd went crazy when he played his remix of Steve Aoki and Tiesto’s track Tornado. The audience reacted to Felix’s delivery of bassy beats with dancing and jumping to the beat.
After Felix’s performance, I made my way over to the main stage for R3hab. The main stage was located in a drained wave pool in the center of the water park. As I entered the crowd, R3hab was just beginnig his set with the track Sending My Love. The crowd went wild, belting out the lyrics and dancing to the beat. R3hab delivered an amazing performance of heavy electro house tunes.
As R3hab was just starting to wrap up his set, the crowd was getting thicker. The anticipation for Calvin Harris was now building. When I heard “My name is Calvin Harris” through the speakers, I was dumbstruck by the fact that I was actually seeing him live. The crowd roared to life.
Calvin kicked off his set with his hit track I’m Not Alone mashed with Hardwell’s Spaceman. The audience responded by throwing their hands in the air and moving to the beat. Calvin kept the energy high, playing his hit tracks We’ll Be Coming Back for You, Bounce, and his number one release Feel So Close. When he played We Found Love the whole crowd sang along in unison. It was incredible.
As I was leaving the venue, I was baffled by how amazing my day was. A colossal night of sights and sounds, Soundwave Music Festival was an experience I’ll never forget.
