If you’ve never been to the Belly Up in Solana Beach, you’re missing out. They don’t have the most impressive lighting setup of all time, but it’s a venue that features great sound, decent drink pricing, and some of the hottest talent around. The show I saw there last is not exception.
Beats Antique are a group that I’ve been a fan of for a while now. There are 3 components of this band: David Satori, Sidecar Tommy, and Zoe Jakes. Together, the three of them make up a live performance consisting of live drums and violin, electronic mixing and looping, live vocals, and a world-renowned belly dancer in Zoe.
Coming into the night of their performance at Belly Up, I had listened to mostly all of their material, and was ready for an epic night. Starting off the night was Inspired Flight- an artist that plays all across the board including hip hop, indie rock, and electronic. He got the vibes going with his glitchy and dubby style, and filled the dance floor quick.
Next up was the extremely talented Wolfgang von Cope. He plays a style more similar to Beats Antique; he blends in gypsy, swing, electronic, techno and more, in a beautiful crossroads of genres. This cooled the mood slightly, but it only served for sexier dance moves and more provocative sounds coming from the speakers.
Finally, we came to the main act. Beats Antique came out full force with multiple belly dancers and a high energy to their set. The house was instantly rocking. They played a great mix of their older material and their new album, Contraption Volume 2, which is a mixture of Persian and Middle Eastern sounds with the glitchiness from the band’s Oakland roots.
During the middle of their set, they slowed the tempo and focused on the performance end of their act. Zoe and others came out on stage with elaborate costumes and props such as swords in their sexy and seductive dance to the beat of the music. The musical artists stayed on top of their game all night, always leaving the crowd wanting more.
I am very pleased to have been able to see this incredible performing trio. You can find them out and about on their current tour, wrapping up with Snowglobe in Lake Tahoe, which is a New Years celebration you will not want to miss. Check out their artist links below, and catch them at one of their shows! Also, be sure to check out Skeleton Key, a track from their new album! Enjoy!
