This week I wanted to take this post in a completely different direction than what I usually post. I know I typically post more music along the lines of the house/tech house variety, but this week I wanted to showcase some artists that are a bit darker, a bit dubbier, a bit heavier. So without further ado let me introduce these guys to you.

Shlohmo
To be honest I stumbled upon Shlohmo pretty recently but nonetheless I immediately fell in love with his sound. Upon further investigation I found out he’s an L.A. native and got even more excited. It’s always really exciting to me to see fresh young talent, in the U.S., and especially from right here in my own backyard. The fact that he comes from the L.A. area makes complete sense though as his sound is along the same lines as Flying Lotus and a lot of the other bass and beat oriented artists that are making a name for themselves right here in L.A. He says he started making beats when he was 14, but didn’t really do much with it till later on around the same time that he stumbled upon Low End Theory, the well known underground bass music/hip-hop/anything goes party right here in Los Angeles that brings some of the hottest talent around. Resident Advisor best describes his sound by saying he came onto their radar with his “lo-fi, psychedelic mix of abstract hip-hop, bouncy synth-funk, breezy trip-hop, and what sounds like lost Mo’ Wax gems from an alternate future.” Check out his tracks, keep your eyes out for up coming shows, and keep your ears to the ground because this kid is going nowhere but up.
Also check out this Nico Jaar remix of Shlohmo’s track “Rained The Whole Time” because you can’t go wrong with either of these guys….something to trip out to. Enjoy!

XXYYXX
XXYXX, or Marcel Dettman, is another beat oriented producer that I found out about pretty recently. The craziest thing about this about this self-made bedroom producer is that he’s just 16 years old; don’t let that fool you into thinking this kid doesn’t have talent. He has quite a bit of talent and with what he’s produced so far I’m quite impressed and excited to see what he has coming in the future. His music is a combination of slow and sexy sounds similar to that of The Weeknd and the slightly dubby style of someone like James Blake. In addition to all this his first full length album is completely free so you can check out what kind of sounds he’s throwing down and see if this guy beats pique your interest.

TNGHT
Last, but not least we have TNGHT which is a side project collaboration between Hudson Mohawke and Lunice. These two up and coming producers have teamed up to create a really interesting sound that is TNGHT; a trap style hip-hop sound that is bass heavy and full of weird synths and drums. I don’t know that I want to try any further to describe their sound because it just wouldn’t do it justice so give these few tracks of their self-titled debut EP a listen and decide for yourself what kind of music these guys are making. The EP preview is available for your listening pleasure but if you want to hear previews of the individual tracks check out the link to their youtube channel below.
