It’s a house party! Well, itĀ wasas house party. Last Friday at Avalon, CONTROL brought down the roof with a big steaming pile of house music. Starting off with the groovy vibes from Troy Kurtz, into the banging style of The Squatters, followed by the bouncy and techy sounds of Style of Eye, and capped off by the massive set of Lazy Rich, then they had Jeff T come in and clean up the mess of melted faces on the dance floor. It was an epic night, so I wanted to talk about each artist individually.
Troy Kurtz
I had only heard his name before, but Troy Kurtz got the night started right by playing a good amount of tech house and groovy tunes. Tech house has always been a great way to get the party started because it feeds off our emotions by providing a danceable and excitable bass line. That’s just what Troy did; get the party started. As the dance floor filled, the intensity increased as Troy got everyone ready for The Squatters.
The Squatters
Again, I had never heard these guys play before, so I came in with very little expectations for the set. However, this duo was phenomenal on the decks- working together flawlessly and with so much passion it was evident they love what they do. Raging on stage the entire time, playing a good mix of electro house tracks, they got Avalon absolutely pumping and geared up for the first headliner of the night: Style of Eye.
Style of Eye
This guy was my most anticipated set of the night. Hailing from Sweden, he decided to bring a little European flavor by throwing down some huge original tracks; including Wet & Dry from his recent EP, as well as a great blend of remixes and huge electro house tracks from artists across the board. He plays a techno infused electro house; with massive robotic synths, bouncy electro effects, and huge drops that make the venue explode every time.
Lazy Rich
Oh buddy. I had seen Lazy Rich before at Voyeur in San Diego, and it was an absolutely banging set. This time around, not only did Lazy Rich bring an even heavier set, but he also brought out the lovely Sue Cho to rock the live vocals during their trackĀ Hello, which was a huge hit last year. The place went nuts, even before Sue came out, but once she hit the mic it was all over. The end of Rich’s set was the hardest, and he threw down some of the best electro house I’ve heard in a long time.
Jeff T
Last but not least we have the man Jeff T. He hit the decks with some big shoes to fill, but did a good job bringing Avalon back down to Earth after Lazy Rich blasted off. He played a variety of house, electro house, and tech house to round out the night and calm everyone down a little bit before headed home at 4am. This is a guy I would keep an eye out for to start making some waves around L.A.
What a night, and what an event. Be sure to check out all the photos from the event below, and get yourself to CONTROL at Avalon this week, featuring Z-Trip and AC Slater!
